The flag of the United Kingdom, commonly known as the Union Jack, is one of the most recognizable national flags in the world. It represents the unity of different countries within the United Kingdom, symbolizing a long and complex history of union and identity.

Meaning
The Union Jack is a composite design that merges the crosses of the patron saints of England (St George’s red cross on white), Scotland (St Andrew’s white saltire on blue), and Ireland (St Patrick’s red saltire on white). Wales is not directly represented, as it was considered part of the Kingdom of England when the original union was formed. The flag signifies strength in unity and shared sovereignty.

History
The current version of the flag dates back to 1801, following the union of Great Britain and Ireland. Earlier versions were created in 1606 and 1707 to reflect earlier unions. Over centuries, the flag has been flown on ships, government buildings, and battlefields, becoming a powerful national symbol of British heritage.
