The current flag was adopted on November 19, 1889, following the proclamation of the Republic of Brazil. It replaced the imperial flag and retained the green and yellow to honour the royal houses of Braganza and Habsburg. The central blue globe with a starry sky was inspired by the night sky over Rio de Janeiro on November 15, 1889, the day the republic was declared.

The blue globe depicts the celestial sphere, with 27 stars representing the country’s states and the Federal District.
