The flag of Russia is a powerful national symbol that reflects the country’s identity, history, and aspirations. With its simple yet striking design of three horizontal stripes—white on top, blue in the middle, and red on the bottom—it is instantly recognizable.

History

The current Russian flag dates back to the late 17th century. It was first used by Tsar Peter the Great, who was inspired by the Dutch flag during his travels in Europe. It officially became the national flag in 1696, was replaced after the Russian Revolution, and then restored in 1991 after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Meaning

The exact meaning of the colors has been debated, but a common interpretation is that white stands for nobility and frankness, blue for loyalty and honesty, and red for courage and love. Another view ties the colors to Russia’s historical social structure: white for the nobility, blue for the clergy, and red for the common people.
