The Story
THE MISPLACED ENGLISHMAN
Istanbul, 1987. I'm wedged into a third-class train compartment with a Turkish grandmother who insists on feeding me suspicious meat pies, when she suddenly asks in broken English: "You American, yes?"
For the third time that week, someone had mistaken my nationality. Earlier, a carpet merchant in the Grand Bazaar had launched into an enthusiastic anti-American tirade before I could correct him. A taxi driver quoted me tourist prices while muttering about "rich Yankees."
That's when I noticed the fellow across from me—a quiet chap with a small England flag patch discretely positioned on his jacket collar. He caught my eye and nodded knowingly. No words needed. The grandmother immediately switched tactics, offering him tea instead of interrogation.
Sometimes the most elegant solutions are the simplest ones.
The England Flag Patch: Tactical and removable, it clearly identifies your heritage without shouting about it. Perfect for those moments when being mistaken for someone else might complicate your journey.
